Trainer Tip #12: Elbow vs. hand plank

Line ten people up and ask them to show you a plank. More than likely, most of them know their toes or knees should be on the ground. But some will hold themselves up on their hands, and others on their elbows.

What’s the difference?

The difference lies in which muscles you want to activate and stabilize your body.

Planks performed on your elbows engage your core muscles more.

Planks on your hands activate your shoulders more. You are still challenging your core. If you have shoulder issues, it’s recommended to perform planks on your elbows.

Stay tuned for next week, when we discuss the proper plank form.
