Trainer Tip #17: What’s in her water bottle?

If you’ve looked around at the gym, chances are you’ve seen patrons swigging … well, you don’t know what but you wonder if you need to as well.

If you’re exercising for about an hour or less, here’s the magic ingredient you need in your bottle:

Water.

That’s it. Your liver has enough stored glycogen, or carbohydrate storage used for energy, for an hour’s worth of exercise. You don’t need to add anything else into your system. Your body already has exactly what it needs.

Athletes exercising longer than an hour may choose to sip on drinks with easily digestible carbohydrates, or consume gels or chews for quick energy.

But for those who are complete their workouts in about an hour or less, you don’t need anything except plain old H2O.
