Trainer Tip #18: Cardio or weights?

I get asked the question, “which is better: cardio or weights?” all the time. All. The. Time.

The easy, and most obvious, answer is it depends on what your goals are. If you’re wanting to run a marathon, you need greater cardiovascular capacity. If you want to increase the size of your muscles, pick up the weights.

But what about the murky middle? What about those of us who just want to be healthy and don’t have huge physical goals?

A new study showed a combination of cardio and strength reduced blood pressure and increased heart health. In a composite score of cardiovascular risk, which summed the contributions of blood pressure, cholesterol, lower body strength, aerobic fitness, and body fat percentage, the combo group was the only one to see a significant improvement compared to the control group.

The answer: do a little of both.

Balance. Shocking.
