Trainer Tip #8: Why 30 seconds is important when holding a stretch

Trainer Tip #8:

Did you know that holding a stretch for 30 seconds or more actually has scientific reasoning? This activates the Golgi tendon organ (GTO), which cases the muscle to relax. The GTO prevents the muscle from excessive stress or possibility of injury.

This is also important in self-myofascial release (SMR), like foam rolling or using a ball on muscle knots. Place gentle pressure on the tight area for 30 seconds to allow the muscle to relax, or “melt.”
