Stop Chasing Health Trends and Start Here: The 10 Things That Actually Move the Needle

There’s no shortage of health advice out there. From supplements to cold plunges, the wellness industry is full of tips, tricks, and “biohacks” promising quick fixes. But before you dive into the latest trend, it’s crucial to make sure your foundation is solid.

I was recently reminded of this in a Facebook group where someone asked for advice on managing pain and fatigue. The responses poured in—supplements, special diets, and all sorts of “hacks.” But it struck me: Are we focusing on the right things first?

It’s like building a house. Before you pick out paint colors or outlet covers, you need a strong foundation, solid framing, and reliable systems. The same goes for your health. Here are the 10 foundational pillars I believe everyone should focus on before getting lost in the details:

1. Sleep Quality sleep is non-negotiable. It’s the one thing you do more than anything else in a day, and its impact on health is profound. Prioritize getting enough, restful sleep.

2. Fuel Your Body Properly Eat enough for your body’s needs, with a focus on protein and fiber. Gentle nutrition—without obsession—helps you feel and function your best.

3. Exercise Movement is essential, but it doesn’t have to look a certain way. Whether it’s walking, yoga, or strength training, find what you enjoy and keep your body in motion.

4. Manage Stress and Mental Health Mental health is as important as physical health. Invest energy in managing stress, setting boundaries, and giving yourself grace.

5. Strong Relationships and Purpose Connection matters. Whether it’s friends, family, or faith, nurturing relationships and having a sense of purpose are key to longevity and happiness.

6. Don’t Smoke This one’s simple: Don’t smoke. The evidence is clear.

7. Limit Alcohol Recommendations are evolving, but less is better. If you drink, do so in moderation—especially as you age.

8. Hydrate Drink your water! Dehydration can throw off everything from energy to lab results. Make hydration a daily habit.

9. Maintain a Healthy Weight (With Nuance) Healthy weight is complex and individual. Focus on the other pillars, and your body will find its natural, healthy state. Remember, health comes in many shapes and sizes.

10. Faith Research shows that faith and spiritual connection can improve both mental and physical health, reducing loneliness and boosting resilience.

Before You Biohack, Build Your Foundation

It’s tempting to chase the latest wellness trend, but none of the “1% hacks” can replace these basics. Get your foundation in place first—sleep, nutrition, movement, connection, and self-care. Then, if you want to experiment with supplements or new routines, you’ll be doing so from a place of strength.

If you’re looking for support in building these habits, check out my “Strong and Vibrant at Home” program, designed for women in perimenopause and beyond. We focus on strength, wellness, and community—together.

And if you found this helpful, share it with a friend or group. Sometimes, the best thing we can do is remind each other to focus on what matters most.

Go out there and have a graced day!
