The intersection of neuropsychology and faith: finding hope and breaking anxiety’s grip

I have to confess I when I first started this podcast I never even occurred to me to do a season on mental health. I don’t know why because we all know, or I think most of us know, that our health is not necessarily our only body, but it’s our physical, spiritual, emotional, and our mental Health. It all goes together to create our whole being and what we are able to do with our body through that.

My guest today, Dr. Michelle Bengtson, and I talk a lot about her own personal journey. She really speaks to those who have walked, or are walking, through depression and anxiety. I love her holistic approach to healing. Not only does she approach it from a clinical perspective but she really emphasizes the spiritual aspect of it. You’ll hear in her story that that was really the key for her.

Dr. Michelle Bengtson not only approaches mental health from a clinical perspective but also emphasizes the spiritual aspect of it.

In today’s episode we discuss:

  • Her personal journey as a neuropsychologist who experienced depression.
  • The difference between depression and anxiety.
  • How depression and anxiety can manifest and the differences in men and women.
  • What happens when depression and anxiety go unaddressed.
  • Addressing depression from a spiritual perspective.
  • How our thought life can impact us and our healing.
  • How to handle the “I don’t have enough energy” from a personal standpoint and for our loved ones.
  • What to do when we hear a scripture that speaks to us and how it can alter our brain chemistry.

Scriptures mentioned

  • 2 Corinthians 10: 5 – We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ.
  • Psalms 30:5 – For his anger lasts only a moment, but his favor lasts a lifetime; weeping may stay for the night, but rejoicing comes in the morning.
  • John 10:10 – The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full.
  • 2 Timothy 1:7 – For the Spirit God gave us does not make us timid, but gives us power, love and self-discipline.
