Zumba: Joy, Energy, Confidence & Sweat all in one class

In this episode of In Our Cultures, I’m excited to introduce you to Mary Cable. I met Mary through our local gym when we both taught there. Mary is known as THE instructor to get if you want to experience a Zumba class. She is definitely a hot ticket.

Zumba: Joy, Energy, Confidence, & Sweat all in one class

We discuss:

  • History of Zumba and what kind of fitness it is
  • What to expect the first time you attend a Zumba class and how you know what to do despite no verbal cues
  • Why Zumba is like a “gateway drug” into the gym
  • Permission to let loose in class – no experience necessary!
  • The difference between “Latino” and “LatinX”
  • Latin culture surrounding family, food, and celebrations
  • The importance of asking the questions to make change
  • Brown lives for Black lives
  • The hope for our children with integrating cultures
  • The pride of the Latin culture

Just like many of my conversations regarding race and culture, I’m a little awkward. I don’t always say the right thing, but I’m trying to learn. What I love about this conversation is Mary gives me permission, or some might say grace, to be imperfect, but to take that step forward.
