Talking with our children about concerning weight changes is tricky. Counselor Michelle Nietert helps guide moms in this sensitive topic to help keep everyone physically and mentally healthy. Amy Connell | Graced Health Podcast

“How do I talk to my child about their weight?”

I don’t know if you got the memo on this, but parenting is tricky. And hard. And particularly difficult as it relates to our children and their body size. If you’ve been with me for any amount of time you know I’m a big believer in taking care of our body so we can do what we are called to do, not so it will look a certain way. But there are times we witness our children’s body size changing and are not sure what to do about it. Just like I shared in season 12 episode 21 with registered dietician Brittany Braswell when we discussed how to know if our children have an eating disorder, I receive questions from other parents often about how to safely address changes in our children’s body size.

Because I don’t feel I’m qualified to answer this, I brought in licensed professional counselor Michelle Nietert to discuss this. Michelle is the coauthor of the devotional Loved and Cherished for Tween girls and she provides practical solutions, real life examples and joins her audiences in the parenting trenches raising two school aged children. You met Michelle in season 10 episode 3 in the enormously popular episode “how to give your teen the tools and vocabulary for emotional health” and I’m thrilled to bring her back.

We discuss:

  • The impact of flippant words and phrases
  • Helpful vs. (unintentionally) hurtful words
  • The importance of using medical professionals to help with weight
  • When it’s time to weave mental health intervention with body health
  • Why involving another party outside of the family can be helpful
  • Why we shouldn’t “do this together”
