Physical Therapist Dr. Tugg Kargbo educates us on the importance of recovery in a fitness or training program.

“No days off” no more! Why recovery days are imperative.

Three times a year, I sit down and reevaluate my workout schedule. I typically do this in August when school starts, january and at the beginning of summer. As I have gotten older, I not only pay attention to my strength and cardiovascular training, I also make sure I am intentionally putting in recovery days. Not rest days, where I don’t do anything, but recovery, where I help get my body back to feeling good. In fact, this episode drops on a Tuesday, which is a schedule recovery day when I do my B.COMPLETE program. I told my son today that Tuesdays are my favorite days because I often don’t have any dots on my calendar so I can bang out projects and I get to have a recovery day.

Today I’m speaking with physical therapist Dr. Lesley Kargbo, who also goes by Tugg with (REPS) Physical Therapy and Training in Missouri City, Texas. Tugg is a physical therapist, a Certified Sports Clinical Specialist and trained in the Selective Functional Movement Assessment (SFMA) and Functional Movement Screening (FMS) systems. Lesley opened Research Enhanced Performance Services (REPS) in December, 2016 and moved into his new facility in 2022, which is where we recorded from.

Tugg’s background includes educating fellow physical therapists in the profession as the former Center Coordinator of Clinical Education at Memorial Hermann Ironman Sports Medicine Institute.

When Tugg is not leading and guiding his team at (REPS) or treating patients in the clinic, he focuses his attention on running, lifting weights, and coaching his two young boys in various recreational sports.

Tugg and I discuss the difference between rest and recovery, how recovery can actually help you achieve your goals (even if your goal is just to not get injured), and different tools and modalities you can use to facilitate recovery.
